Florence Mwando, currently a nurse practitioner and educator in ophthalmology at Queen’s Medical Centre, worked at the Lusaka School of Nursing in Zambia between 1986 and 1989.
She collected the back issues, including Nursing Times and Health Service Journal, while on secondment to the RCN and did extra shifts to raise the money needed to send them to Africa.
‘The last thing I wanted was the magazines going to waste by being thrown away when young student nurses could get so much benefit from them and learn from them,’ she said. ‘They do not have the same access to the internet and library resources like we do.’
‘Between September and May as part of my personal development I did an extra 45 shifts as a nurse practitioner in the emergency department. This helped me to save the £510 to pay for the air freight to send the magazines to Zambia.’
The magazines arrived in Lusaka last month, where they were distributed to students.
