Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSNurses' leg ulcer knowledge lacking
Patients with leg ulcers are not receiving optimal care from nurses according to a study carried out by researchers in Belgium
The study involved 789 nurses employed by community healthcare organizations and the independent sector.
The researcher identified that only 58.7% of patients received the recommended compression therapy treatment.
A third of patients with pain received analgesics but only half took their analgesics as prescribed. Half of the nurses gave lifestyle advice including leg elevation, promoting physical activity and improving nutritional intake.
The researchers found that nurses who thought that they have adequate knowledge about leg ulcers were more likely to provide lifestyle advice compared with those who felt that their knowledge was inadequate.
