Nurses may ‘catch’ patient stress

Mental health nurses who hear repeated stories of suffering from trauma victims can experience secondary trauma themselves, warn US researchers.

They examined levels of stress and job burnout among 236 social workers in New York following the 11 September terrorist attacks.

‘Listening to a person’s traumatic experiences can be a very difficult experience for a clinician,’ said the authors in the journal Research on Social Work Practice.

‘Sometimes caregivers need emotional support of their own and if they don’t get it, they can become emotionally ill.’
