Help – Lest We Forget
Poem submitted by Joan Marsh
I am cocooned within these four
Unforgiving walls that become more
Restrictive by the day, as many carers
Of all shapes and sizes come and go
To wash, move me twice a day between
Bed and chair, rarely sure which gives me
Most relief and fight off bedsores that
Can rear up unexpectedly, as my pulley
Strap often pulled too tight, and the
Luxury of a glass of Gin and Tonic left out
Of sight even reach, utensils missing with
My food and I resort to bare hands as, sadly,
Carers can’t imagine the dependency I need
Dashing frantically from one patient to another.
Now unable to concentrate on a book, rely on
Continuous TV to preserve my sanity, as the
Beauty of my garden taunts me beyond
The glass, and long to feel, smell, the wet grass
Friends call and ring, praise my courage
As I lie her helpless as a baby and
Long for sleep to eliminate thoughts of
A continuously wet pad or the uncontrollable
Need to evacuate.
Lest we forget – Help.

Heart wrenching but so true in many aspects. All nurses should think of this whilst at work & maybe learn how the patients actually feeling from these words written.
