'People call me nurse'

Poem submitted by Rebecca Oliver

People call me nurse….I was sent from the heavens you know

A paragon of virtue, with never a vice, and a halo for all to see glow

My caring efforts shall never cease, crippling fatigue I do not feel

As I hold you in my arms, and dampen your brow my gentle touch will instantly heal

The outside world I do not abide, life’s pressures are of no concern

If you call out my name I will speedily appear and the soles of my feet never burn

With the loved ones of so many I can spend precious time, to explain, reassure and console

I know just what to say through the deepest despair and no hardship upon me takes its toll

If the patient that I could call my friend should be stolen so suddenly,

Tears shall not appear in my eyes, their faces won’t remain in my memory

As I leave your bedside and float my way home I can forget your pain and toil

When I rest my head on a pillow free of guilt, endless thoughts in my head don’t uncoil

People call me nurse…. but I wasn’t sent from the heavens you know

My uniform can conceal the weakness I feel and my fear of affliction and woe

You may not approve of the person I am, but I’m as human as the humans I treat

Through benevolence I can feel despondency and rage, as the pressure reaches defeat

Mistakes I can make, some decisions ill made, you may hear words spoken in jest

And though I am not the angelic figure you crave, I can at least promise to do my best

  • It gives the reality that nurses also have feelings and we will always try to do our best for the patient and patients should always remember nurses are unique individuals you are not perfect but are liable to falter @ times while taking care of the patient
