Student nurse

Poem submitted by Amanda Palmer, student nurse from Canterbury Christchurch University

Some things I like when going to work, is arriving on time not looking a burke.
I like it when the roads are clear, and I can get on with driving here.
Once I’m there I like it to, smell fresh and clean not like a zoo.
I like to get myself a tea, caffeine helps me to feel like me.

Handover must be clear and exact, else I feel like a juggling act.
I like to go on drug rounds you see, rather than making the patient’s tea.
When the drugs are done washes begin, I like it when the patient’s muck in.
Checked the obs and are all ok, fluids are totalled I’m happy to say.

For learning skills that will help me, good explanations are the key.
Time to think not rushing around, good patient care all safe and sound.
I like it when I admit new patients, I’m interested and not complacent,
When listening to their life story, as long as it is not too gory.

Discharging is my favourite time, gleaming faces so happy they shine.
Explanations of drugs before they have left, helps me to use the ward BNF.
Chlor cleaning the bed, now I’ve learnt how, New sheets in a pack ready for now
New patient to admit onto the ward, paper, more paper oh how I’m bored.

Visiting hours start at 5, time to answer the relative’s whys……..
I like it when nurse gives them info, it helps me learn things that I don’t know.
When visitings over it now my turn, to hand over things that I have learnt.
Tomorrow I’m back its started to rain, I set the alarm to do it all again.
