Drugs commonly used in the treatment of osteoporosis nearly triple the risk of bone necrosis, according to a study.
According to the Canadian research conducted on more than 87,837 patients, those on oral bisphosphonates were 2.87 times more likely to develop bone necrosis.
Bone necrosis is a condition where blood supply is cut off, causing the internal tissues of the bone to collapse and die.
The US Food and Drug Administration issued a warning at the beginning of the month that oral bisphosphonates can cause severe bone pain.
