Plans for London's health workforce revealed

‘Workforce in London – A Strategic Framework’ outlines plans to deliver £132 million to train more than 15,000 key healthcare workers to deliver a superior, more accessible service. It also promises that at least 4,000 new jobs will be created.

There are plans to fundamentally change to the way doctors and nurses provide care to patients. Over ten years, NHS London wants more staff to work in settings outside of the hospital environment and closer to communities.

25% of doctors are currently based in a community setting – this will rise to 47% over ten years and 40% of nurses will be community based compared to only 20% at present.

The plans are designed to make Lord Darzi's vision of the capital's health service, published last year in his Framework for Action report, become reality.

Ruth Carnall, chief executive of the NHS said that the sole priority of ‘Workforce for London’ was to provide a quality service for patients.

‘This is about promoting excellence in training and education, but also about getting the right healthcare professionals working in the right place,’ she added.
