Play helps children prepare for surgery
Nurses should incorporate ‘therapeutic’ play into preparations for paediatric surgery, say researchers from Hong Kong and Australia.
Visiting the operating room and using dolls to explain procedures helped reduce patient anxiety in a study of 203 children.
‘The study results promote awareness in nurses and parents that play is a very important part of children’s lives, and heighten the importance of integrating therapeutic play as an essential component of holistic and quality nursing care,’ the authors said.
