Alan Johnson has been moved from his job as health secretary to the home office as part of Gordon Brown’s cabinet reshuffle.
Mr Johnson will be credited as the man who steadied the ship after the controversial policies adopted by his predecessor, Patricia Hewitt.
Mr Johnson will be remembered by nurses for the three-year pay deal negotiated with unions, worth almost 8%.
He also oversaw Lord Darzi’s Next Stage Review of the NHS and championed public health in an attempt to crack down and obesity and excessive alcohol consumption.
Other policies backed by Mr Johnson include the Prime Minister’s Commission on the future of nursing.
