Nurses' workshop to shape the future of nursing
Nurses and midwives across the east of England were invited to take part in a workshop, which will help to shape the Prime Minister’s Commission on the Future of Nursing and Midwifery.
More than 100 nurses and midwives were asked to put forward their views on the future of nursing and midwifery at a workshop in Stansted.
Local nurses and midwives were able to feed back their opinions on the day and these will be used by the Commission to shape its future work.
Ruth May, Chief Nursing Officer for NHS East of England, said: “Our regional workshop was an excellent way for nurses and midwives in the east of England to come together to consider recommendations and priorities for the commission.
“The outcomes of these discussions will be significant in contributing to the Prime Minister’s Commission and will help to further develop the future roles of nurses and midwives.”
Ann Keen, health minister and chair of the commission, said: “We have had an overwhelming response to the first stage of our crucial work in shaping the future of nursing and midwifery and this has helped the commission identify a vision statement for the future of the profession and 10 hot topics where we want to hear more views during the autumn.
“Today’s event is an opportunity for the public, patients and staff to let us know what they think of our vision statement and to debate together the responses to the hot topics we have identified.
“It is essential that we hear views from those our work will directly involve and impact on as we help shape the future of nurses and midwives and ensure that they continue to take centre stage in improving the quality of patient care.”
The commission will present its final report to Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Health Secretary Andy Burnham early next year.
