Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSPM's commission will seek to bring NHS Constitution 'to life'
The NHS Constitution and its core values of quality and compassion will be analysed by the newly established Prime Minister’s Commission on the Future of Nursing and Midwifery, health minister Ann Keen has told Nursing Times.
The creation of the commission was exclusively revealed last month by Nursing Times.
Commission chair Ms Keen said that the members of the group would be meeting with the teams working on shaping the NHS Constitution to discuss how the core values of care identified in the document, such as treating patients with dignity and respect, could be brought into the heart of nursing.
‘There is a value system built into the NHS Constitution and one of the things the commission will look at doing is bringing the NHS Constitution to life,’ she said.
The government launched the NHS Constitution in January and hopes it will empower patients and the public by outlining their legal rights. The document is to be refined and developed over time to keep it relevant.
It contains a number of pledges to patients, public and staff. For NHS staff, the Department of Health said it will mean an ‘NHS-wide commitment’ to equipping them with the tools, training and support they need to deliver high quality care for patients.
