Free back pain course for primary care nurses

BackCare, in partnership with BMJ Learning, said one out in every ten primary care consultations was for back pain.

Dr Dries Hettinga, head of research and policy at BackCare, said: ‘There is so much happening in the world of back pain research that it can be difficult for doctors and nurses to stay up to date and apply the latest evidence in their clinic. This is why BackCare teamed up with BMJ Learning and developed this course.’

The online training course consists of a series of interactive modules that guide the learner through situations that clinicians will recognize. It deals with diagnosing specific back conditions and provides tips on how to help patients in their recovery.

While the focus is on acute back pain, many tips can also be used when a patient with more persistent back pain presents.

Dr Charles Campion-Smith, a GP in Dorchester who was one of the first to try the course, said: ‘It includes key information about this common condition and that will make it easier for the busy GP or nurse practitioner to manage it safely, effectively and in line with best evidence within a standard consultation.’
