A new nationally-accredited training scheme for smoking cessation specialist nurses and other health professionals working in the area will start in June.
A consortium headed up by University College London has been chosen by the Department of Health to head up the new training system for NHS Stop Smoking practitioners. It follows a procurement process which started last October.
The new NHS Centre for Smoking Cessation & Training is expected to be fully operational by the end of June 2009. The initial contract will be for a period of three years.
Public health minister Dawn Primarolo said: ‘The winning bid offered an unrivalled blend of skills and experience that will be essential to the success of this challenging project.
‘This has the potential to make an important national and international contribution to this key area of public health,’ she added.
