QNI website gains national recognition

The Queen’s Nursing Institute’s 150th anniversary of district nursing website has received two national accolades.

At the Third Sector Excellence Awards on Thursday, the QNI’s website was overall winner in the website category.

The British Library has also just chosen the site to be archived permanently in its online collection.

Rosemary Cook, Director of the QNI said, “We are delighted to have received two such prestigious accolades for the QNI’s website. There is always strong competition for the Third Sector Excellence Awards and for a small charity like the QNI to have won the website category is a real achievement. This will help to raise awareness of the 150th anniversary of district nursing across the voluntary sector, and recognition of the work of district nurses with the general public.

“The decision by the British Library to archive the website permanently means that this resource will continue to be available to the public in years to come, though the QNI will keep the website live and updated at least until the end of 2010. We have been adding material throughout 2009, including newly discovered photographs and stories of district nurses working all over the world. The story that the website tells is that district nurses have always had to be resourceful and creative when nursing in the home and other settings, including some very remote and challenging places.”

Since being launched in December 2008, the site has received around 1,000 visitors a month. It includes pages on the history of district nursing, a timeline, archive photo gallery, films, links, and personal stories from nurses through the ages. It also includes invalid recipes and treatments that were used years before the NHS was created.
