Research nurses take arthritis prize

A research nurse has won a national prize in recognition of his work with arthritis patients.

Mwidimi Ndosi (pictured), based at Leeds University’s academic and clinical unit of musculoskeletal nursing, has been awarded Arthritis Research Campaign’s prize in rheumatology for allied health professionals.

Mr Ndosi won the £1,000 prize for an article on research looking at the educational needs of arthritis patients.

With a colleague Dr Jackie Hill, he developed a short questionnaire – the Educational Needs Assessment Tool – for patients with a variety of different types of arthritis including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.

Mr Ndosi said: ‘To deliver the best patient-tailored information, clinicians need to assess their needs in order to plan their education activities more effectively.

“Patients’ needs change and vary very much depending on their age and gender, what type of arthritis they have, and most importantly the stage of their condition. For example, a newly diagnosed patient’s needs are quite different to someone who has had arthritis for years. We hope the ENAT will help clinicians to quickly assess what patients want to know, and give them information which is timely and relevant,’ he said.
