Specialist eating disorder teams created

Patients with eating disorders will benefit from two new teams set up by the Assembly Government.

The new teams for North Wales and South Wales will comprise of specialist clinicians and will work with GPs, social services, child and adolescent mental health services and community health teams.

An extra £500,000 will be available this year for recruitment of additional staff and training this year and another £1m next year to sustain and develop services.

The plans hope to simplify access to eating disorder services, enhance joint working by staff and services, provide specialist clinical staff to support and provide access to evidence based therapies.

There is also another £5,000 for the development of an electronic course on eating disorders for primary care nurses.

Health minister Edwina Hart said: 'Prompt diagnosis and treatment is essential in providing support and care for people with eating disorders.

'This will lower the risk of their condition worsening and improve the outcome for individuals.'
