Therapy guidance for Barrett's oesophagus
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence has issued guidance on photodynamic therapy for Barrett’s oesophagus.
The condition involves the internal lining of the oesophagus becoming damaged by long-term reflux of the stomach contents and in some cases can lead to the development oesophageal cancer.
Photodynamic therapy involves the patient being injected with a drug that makes the affected lining of the oesophagus sensitive to light, after which a laser light source is passed down into the oesophagus where it is used to start a reaction that destroys the abnormal lining of the oesophagus, with the aim of preventing the progression to cancer.
