Prime Minister's commission to be chaired by Ann Keen

The Prime Minister’s commission will be chaired by Ann Keen, parliamentary under secretary for health services

Ms Keen, the MP for Brentford and Isleworth in south-west London, joined the commission in 2007.

Speaking to Nursing Times in her first in-depth interview after taking up office, Ms Keen said: ‘Today’s nurses really have the knowledge and the skills to provide the patient care of the present and without question the future.’

She was previously parliamentary private secretary to Mr Brown while he was chancellor and before that parliamentary private secretary to former health secretary Frank Dobson. Before entering politics, she worked as a nurse tutor and as a district nurse.

She was also general secretary of the Community and District Nursing Association and served on the Commons health select committee.

  • Chair Ann Keen, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Health

  • Dame Christine Beasley, Chief Nursing Officer, Department of Health

  • Professor Anne-Marie Rafferty, dean/head of the Florence Nightingale School for Nursing and Midwifery, King’s College London, who worked on reforming the US nursing role under President Clinton

  • Tamar Thompson, director of strategic partnerships at the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement

  • Dame Donna Kinnair, director of nursing at Southwark PCT, who was an adviser to Lord Laming throughout his inquiry into the death of Victoria Climbié.

Former nurse and health minister Ms Keen has been chosen to lead the commission because of the perceived success of the development of the NHS Next Stage Review by health minister and surgeon Lord Ara Darzi. As well as the main commission, the commission will benefit from an expert advisory panel including eminent figures such as Baroness Audrey Emerton, and internationally renowned nurse researcher Professor Linda Aiken, from Pennsylvania University.

  • Oh who cares! Am I the only one who is really sick and tired of all this pedantic back slapping? All these 'people' (and I say that with gritted teeth!) with nomark fancy job titles and prefixes all saying the right buzz words in their little meetings and commitees but never actually changing anything?

    Unsuitable or offensive?
