Scotland approves antibiotic for MRSA infections
Scottish Medicines Consortium has approved daptomycin for the treatment of MRSA blood stream infections when associated with heart infections – right-sided infective endocarditis – or complicated skin and soft-tissue infections in adults.
Daptomycin, one of only two new classes of antibiotics in over 20 years, has been shown to be as effective as existing agents in treating infections with or without endocarditis.
But its developer Novartis said its rapid mode of action and a once daily 30min dose offered a faster treatment for patients with MRSA.
