Sexual angle to chronic disease
Healthcare professionals should put the impact of sexual dysfunction at the front of their mind when treating chronic diseases, a leading psychiatrist has claimed.
In an editorial based on findings of three studies published this week, Rosemary Basson, a psychiatrist at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, said sexual dysfunction often pointed to mores serious problems such as coronary artery disease.
Solving patients' sexual problems can also improve recovery by improving their mental state, said Ms Basson.
'Matters of the mind greatly modulate immunological, neurological and endocrinological systems. Improved mental state from regained satisfactory sexual life might well ameliorate the conditions we seek to treat,' said Dr Basson.
