Chronic cough and stress urinary incontinence link questioned
US researchers have found no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of stress urinary incontinence between patients with or without a chronic cough.
However the results of the cross-sectional prospective survey identified that those with a chronic cough have increased urinary frequency. The researches suggest that this increase in frequency may be used to prevent SUI and this may mask a larger difference between the two groups.
It is suggested that a chronic cough leads to increases in intra-abdominal pressure which could cause or aggravate symptoms of stress urinary incontinence (SUI).
