Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSC.diff infection rates fall by 11%
Latest figures for C.difficile infection rates show that they have fallen by 11% in England, according to the Health Protection Agency.
The figures show that there were 6,257 cases recorded in patients over 65 between October and December 2008, compared to 7,062 cases between July and September 2008.
The rates have also fallen by 38% compared to the same quarter in 2007. A spokesperson for the Health Protection Agency said: ‘Cases of C.diff have fallen again this quarter demonstrating how hard NHS staff are working to fight healthcare associated infections.’
However, the HPA warned that the NHS should not to take its ‘eyes off the ball’ if it was to ‘win the fight’ against C.diff.
‘This shouldn’t lead to complacency around tackling the infections that are preventable and engaging in the battle to continually drive down rates of healthcare associated infections,’ said an HPA spokesperson.
