Breastfeeding campaign launched
A campaign has been launched to teach parents about the health benefits of breastfeeding.
The drive by NHS Scotland will also be aimed at encouraging family members to support new mothers.
Breastfeeding - the Feedgood Factor campaign comes as the Scottish government is due to reveal annual figures on breastfeeding, but it has said that it hopes to increase the number of babies who are exclusively breastfed at six to eight weeks from 26.6% in 2006/07 to 33.3% by 2010/11.
Public health minister Shona Robison said: ‘The support of family and friends in encouraging mums to breastfeed cannot be over-estimated.
‘Dads, grandparents and other loved ones can make a huge impact on whether mums continue breastfeeding for a baby’s first six months, which lays the foundations for a healthier life.’
Stacey Wallace, 24, of Dundee, who has a six-month old daughter, Erin, helped to launch the campaign.
She said: ‘I was not breastfed and none of my friends breastfed their babies, but the health benefits that breastfeeding provides was the big incentive for me to breastfeed Erin.’
She said that she had the support of her partner throughout her time breastfeeding.
