Children suffering as more parents miss out on playtime

Three-quarters of parents do not have enough time to play with their children, a survey has suggested.

Half of parents blamed work commitments for their lack of time getting involved in playing with their children, while one in two also stated that there are not enough places for children to play safely, the ICM survey commissioned by Play England found.

Director of the organisation, Adrian Voce, said that the pressures of modern life are limiting the amount of time that parents and children can play.

He explained that play is important for a child’s health, learning and development.

‘Most importantly, play is fundamental to their enjoyment of childhood; it can’t be taken for granted. All of us, not just parents, have a part to play in allowing and supporting children to play,’ he said.

While 72% of parents want to play with their children more, youngsters are also struggling to find free time due to homework and extra-curricular activities.

Children questioned in the survey said that a lack of time to play left them feeling bored, unhappy and missing their friends.
