High-fat diet helps epileptic girl
An epileptic nine-year-old girl is said to be showing considerable improvement after starting on a fat-rich diet.
Doctors recommended that Lucy Murphy, who suffered severe epileptic seizures and was frequently on emergency medication, switch to a high-fat diet and consume little carbohydrate.
Fat metabolism produces ketones which can help control seizures. Lucy’s diet consists of nearly 80% fat and she is allowed a maximum of only 20g of carbohydrates a day.
Eating lots of cream has helped her daughter a great deal, said Denise Murphy, 47, of Exeter.
‘She has cream with everything,’ Mrs Murphy said. ‘It has given her back some sort of life. She can now participate in activities and loves going to Brownies, ballet and music lessons.’
The nine-year-old’s breakfast typically consists of butter-covered pancakes made with a special Ketocal supplement and she has cream instead of milk with her tea. She also consumes aubergines to soak up the fat and has a health body mass index.
Her ketogenic diet is supported by a specialist dietician funded by the charity Daisy Garland.
