Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSHPV vaccine death sparks investigation
An urgent investigation to determine why a 14-year-old girl died shortly after receiving the HPV vaccine has been launched.
Natalie Morton was given the HPV1 jab at the Blue Coat Church of England School in Coventry, and suffered a “rare but extreme reaction”. She died at the city’s University Hospital. A number of other girls also experienced nausea and dizziness and were sent home from school.
Dr Caron Grainger, joint director for public health for NHS Coventry and Coventry City Council, said: ‘No link can be made between the death and the vaccine until a post-mortem takes place. NHS Coventry has taken the step to quarantine the batch of vaccine being used. We are conducting a full investigation into this tragedy.’
Experts estimate that more than 1.4m doses of the vaccine have been administered so far. The injection is not compulsory and consent is required before it is given to under-16s.
The NHS says Ceravix, which is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, underwent “rigorous safety testing” as part of the licensing process.
