Support for parents of premature babies
Special care baby charity Bliss has launched a DVD to help train parents of premature babies in infant resuscitation.
The DVD, originally produced by NHS Ayrshire and Arran with funding from Bliss, gives parents precise information and a step-by-step demonstration of what to do if their baby chokes or stops breathing.
The charity hopes the DVD will help equip parents practically and emotionally in caring for their baby by themselves. It is designed to be used initially by unit staff as a teaching aid as part of the discharge pathway, which parents can then take home with them.
Liz Jones, a neonatal nurse at University Hospital of North Staffordshire, said: ‘The DVD reinforces a safe approach to Baby Life Support for parents. It is easy to understand and it encourages parents to practice what they have seen.’
Copies are available free of charge to any neonatal healthcare professional or parent whose baby is in, or has recently been discharged from special care. To order copies, contact Zoë Chivers
