Students who have allergic rhinitis symptoms on an exam day are 40% more likely to drop a grade in their GCSE exams than other students, but this rises to 70% if they are taking sedating anti-histamines, according to UK research.
Exam performances in mocks and final GCSE exams for the core subjects of Maths, English or Science were compared with responses to questionnaires on hayfever symptoms on the day of the exam.
The study by the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology was presented last week at a European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology conference in London.
The study involved 1,834 students, aged 15-17 years.
