Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSCOPD strategy to be unveiled next week
A long-awaited national strategy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease for England could be available for consultation by the end of this month, Nursing Times has learnt.
The Department of Health has appointed clinical respiratory leads to help implement the final strategy, which they hope to publish by March. The strategy was originally expected to be published in spring 2009.
Last month the government appointed two new tsars to tackle respiratory disease –Department of Health chief scientific officer and a respiratory clinical scientist Sue Hill and East of England strategic health authority medical director Robert Winter – with a priority of getting the COPD strategy back on track.
Association of Respiratory Nurse Specialists vice chair Annette Duck said: “There are many patients [with COPD] who are still not being properly assessed and managed who would benefit from evidenced based best care.
“The strategy will help us to develop the most appropriate services such as pulmonary rehab, outreach, end of life care and home oxygen assessment services,” she said.
