Minister hails rise in Scots attempting to quit smoking
New figures that revealed thousands more Scots are trying to stop smoking than in 2007 are ‘really encouraging’, the public health minister has said.
The number who are attempting to kick the habit in Scotland jumped from 44,019 to 50,121, according to annual statistics.
More than one in three of those had not smoked for more than two weeks, but the success rate falls to 18% over three months.
While 445 of attempts to stop were through pharmacies, the number through NHS smoking cessation services has risen to 5%.
Public health minister Shona Robison added that smokers are four times more likely to quit successfully by using NHS services.
The figures come as the Scottish Government tries to introduce a ban on cigarette vending machines and get stores to move tobacco products under their counters.
