St John’s Wort not effective for ADHD

St John’s Wort is not effective in treating young people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), despite being regularly used as an alternative therapy for the condition, according to latest research.

In an eight-week study US researchers compared St John’s Wort, Hypericum perforatum, with placebo in 54 young people, aged six to 17, with a diagnosis of ADHD.

‘The results suggest administration of H. perforatum has no additional benefit beyond that of placebo for treating symptoms of child and adolescent ADHD,’ said the authors.
