Nurse investigated by NMC for selling essays on Ebay
A registered nurse will next week face an NMC disciplinary hearing for selling essays on Ebay.
Linda Shearer, 45, from Glasgow, is accused of selling two essays on eBay previously submitted to Glasgow Caledonian University and dishonestly advertising the mark they received.
The Conduct and Competence Committee hearing will commence at 9.30am on Tuesday 9th June at Menzies Glasgow.
Last year, Nursing Times revealed a network of websites are providing ‘custom written’ essays for nursing students.

I am a student and think students are buying essays on the internet. When somebody who never gets good marks suddenly starts getting high marks then it always raises questions with me. But at the end of the day its the patients who suffer as the quality of care will be substandard they will be noone to help you deliver good care skills.

I think that these 'custom written' essays are not necessarily any good; reason being, I have just been into these sites and read some of their free offers. They are full of grammatical errors, and use quite a lot of quotes. I do agree with 'Anonymous 15-Jun-2009 3:14 pm' that students who are buying them are missing out on vital education by the lack of research put into their studies. However, I can certainly empathise with the temptation to do so, university can be tough. I could highly recommend to people who are tempted to buy an essay, to spend their money on a book that teaches you how to write a good essay — and start from the basics. I have purchased numerous books (second hand from amazon.com) myself and have seen considerable improvements with my grades. My last essay marker comments mentioned 'very well written and researched' which was an amazing feeling, knowing how much hard work and effort I put into the process. Once you know the basics of essay writing, it does get easier. So please give this a go, it can be time consuming but well worth the rewards.
Following is a list of books that have helped me, also, inside, they have further reading lists to improve your writing which could be acquired from the library:
Gimenez, J (2007) Writing for nursing and midwifery students. Hampshire: Palgrave Macmillan.
Cottrell, S. (2008) The Study Skills Hand Book. Hampshire: Palgrave Macmillan.
Dixon, T (2004) How To Get a First. Oxon: Routledge.
Before acquiring these books, I did spend a considerable amount of time reading books on basic English grammar. I discovered plenty of helpful hints and reminders that had been long forgotten since attending school.

It is a daunting prospect to write an essay with no idea what is expected from you by the course tutor.
I was very fortunate when as an older nurse I decided to 'do' my degree in Nursing Studies, that our tutors of the modules I took passed around copies of previous efforts to give as an idea of what she was expecting. They all made sure all were handed back at the end of the session! Reflective accounts/ critical analysis - never had them in my day so it was a steep learning curve, but learn I did.
Quite right previous commentors- doing it yourself - best way to learn. But badger your lecturers/tutors for help. They get paid enough!
