Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSCMO issues warning over counterfeit swine flu drugs
The Government’s CMO (Chief Medical Officer) has warned the public to avoid panic-buying counterfeit swine flu drugs on the internet, after saying that there was no need to self-medicate.
Sir Liam Donaldson has reassured the public that Britain has enough Tamiflu stockpiled after it was revealed that the number of new swine flu cases could hit 100,000 per day.
The warning comes as it was confirmed that the UK has moved past the containment phase of the disease and into the ‘treatment phase’.
Sir Liam said that Britain would be one of the first countries to have access to a vaccine, with the first supplies expected to arrive at the end of August.
Speaking on GMTV he said: ‘We have got a massive stockpile in this country and everybody can have access to it through the NHS.’
He said he was ‘surprised’ that health services had controlled the virus for as long as they had after the first case in Britain was recorded in April.
In the UK three people - who all had underlying health problems - have died after contracting the swine flu.
