Confirmed UK swine flu cases reach 4,000

The number of confirmed swine flu cases in the UK has increased to more than 4,000 following the announcement of 538 new cases in England on Friday.

With an extra 72 new cases confirmed in Scotland, the UK total now stands at 4,322.

There are now 3,364 cases of swine flu in England, with the greatest concentration in the West Midlands SHA area, which has 1,516 cases. London has 985 cases. The North West has just 55 confirmed cases.

The regional figures, announced by the Health Protection Agency, are based on the laboratory that carries out the tests of samples.
