Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSDH issues guidance to help NHS cope with swine flu
The Department of Health has today issued guidance on how NHS hospitals and organisations can manage any surge in demand for health care organisations caused by swine flu.
The aim of the guidance is to support the NHS and social care organisations to supplement their existing plans in the event of a pandemic, when there may be a significant increase in demand for care.
The document aims to provide staff with guidance on operational issues surrounding the increase in demand for services, as well as to support clinicians in the triaging of patients.
A package of clinical pathways and decision parameters will be made available in the next few days, to help those with the application of the guidance when treating patients with flu symptoms.
These will include swine flu community and hospital assessment tools for adults and children under 16, a GP authorisation voucher for the supply of oseltamavir liquid medication for under one-year-olds, as well as general supporting information.
