Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSGP may have died from swine flu
A Bedfordshire GP who died at the weekend had swine flu, NHS officials have confirmed.
NHS East of England said Dr Michael Day died on Saturday 11 July 2009 in the Luton and Dunstable Hospital.
A swab test taken at the hospital has subsequently been confirmed as being positive for the H1N1 swine flu virus, the strategic health authority said in a statement.
‘The exact cause of death in this case is still unknown and the case has been reported to the coroner who will investigate it,’ the statement added.
Dr Paul Hassan, senior partner at Priory Gardens Health Centre, where Dr Day worked, said: ‘This news has come as such a shock to us all and we are completely devastated. I know the news will also come as a great shock to our patients, many of whom have known him for many years.’
The practice, supported by its PCT, NHS Bedfordshire, is contacting practice staff and patients who have been in recent contact with Dr Day so they can be assessed and offered anti-viral drugs if necessary.
