Over half of UK swine flu hospital admissions and inpatient deaths occurred in people with no previous health problems, according to a new study.
The research, which covered 631 people admitted to 55 hospitals over a five month period in 2009, also found pregnant women, the under 5s and people with long term respiratory problems were more susceptible to the disease than the general population and the government was right to prioritise these groups for vaccination. The information was collected as a part of the government’s Influenza Clinical Information Network (FLU CIN) surveillance programme.
