Number of confirmed swine flu cases in UK increases to 32

A further 390 suspected cases are still under investigation in agency laboratories.

The four new cases are associated with travel to Mexico by people based in the north west, east of England, east midlands and west midlands.

Meanwhile there are 27 suspected cases of swine flu under investigation in Scotland, the country’s health secretary has revealed.

The number of confirmed cases in the country is still four, said Scottish health secretary Nicola Sturgeon, with a further probable case in the Grampian region.

In a statement to the Scottish Parliament, Ms Sturgeon said: ‘While we are continuing to see new possible cases of A(H1N1) throughout Scotland, it is encouraging that we have not seen any further probable or confirmed cases today.

‘All the possible cases currently under investigation are travel-related cases which indicates that our strenuous efforts to prevent person to person transfer are proving effective.

‘I would once again stress that the risk to public health in Scotland remains low but it is right that everyone should remain vigilant as we work to disrupt the spread of the virus.

The 27 possible cases are in the health board areas of Borders (1), Fife (3), Forth Valley (4), Grampian (2), Greater Glasgow and Clyde (5), Highland (2), Lanarkshire (2), Lothian (6) and Tayside (2).
