Number of confirmed UK swine flu cases rises to eight
There are now eight cases of swine flu in the UK and hundreds more patients are being tested, according to the Health Protection Agency.
The HPA’s Centre for Virus Reference Department is investigating a further 230 cases.
All of the new cases – two in London and on from the north east of England – have mild symptoms and are responding to treatment at home.
HPA officials are ensuring that any close contacts of any of the cases are offered antiviral drugs as a precaution.
So far, all cases in the UK have been people returning from Mexico. The agency advises who becomes unwell within a week of their return from an affected area to stay at home and contact their GP or NHS Direct.
Further officials are to be posted at UK airports to provide information for passengers arriving from Mexico.
