Scotland launches hand hygiene drive in schools
School nurses in Scotland are being called upon to teach pupils the essentials of good hand hygiene as part of efforts to reduce the risk of spreading swine flu.
The Scottish Government’s national hand hygiene campaign pack should have been sent to every nursery and primary school in time for the start of the new term, which began this week.
The pack is intended to help encourage children to develop a lifelong habit of regular handwashing and also contain information for pupils on the proper use of tissues.
Scottish health secretary Nicola Sturgeon and education secretary Fiona Hyslop announced the campaign during a visit Eastfield Primary School in Cumbernauld. They were accompanied by public health nurse Sandra Rae and took part in a hand hygiene demonstration with pupils.
Ms Sturgeon said: “Our main priority continues to be how best we can protect the health and wellbeing of the public, including children and young people, during the H1N1 outbreak.”
