Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSSixth Scottish swine flu death confirmed
An Islay woman has become the sixth Scottish patient to die while infected with the swine flu virus, Scottish health officials have confirmed.
The 59-year-old woman died after being admitted to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley on August 8. She had existing medical problems as well as suffering from swine flu.
Scottish Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: “The tragic death of this woman is devastating for her family and those who were close to her, and I’d like to express my sincere condolences.
“As we have seen in previous cases, this patient was suffering from underlying health conditions and her death should not cause alarm among the general population.
“Fortunately in the vast majority of cases, most people have fairly mild symptoms and make a full recovery within a week. But it’s important that you get the help you need as quickly as possible if you are at greater risk.
“The latest figures for Scotland also show that, while the virus continues to circulate, the rate of GP consultations for flu-like illnesses have continued to decrease slightly.”
