Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSSwine flu cases fall
The latest figures show that about 4,500 people were newly diagnosed with swine flu in England last week.
In the previous week there were 5,000 and a fraction of the estimated 100,000 cases more than a month ago. But there were now 61 deaths in England linked to the virus, an increase on last week’s 57.
Wales and Northern Ireland each recorded one death, while there were seven in Scotland.
Sir Liam Donaldson, the chief medical officer, said he had been analysing statistics from Scotland since schools there reopened after their summer break.
Sir Liam said: ‘There is no suggestion of any significant upturn in Scotland.’ He added that England was unlikely to see a peak ‘before the second half of October’.
A rise in the number of swine flu cases has been predicted as schools and universities across in the UK return after the break.
