Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSSwine flu infects more than 40 children in one school
An outbreak of swine flu at a school in the West Midlands has infected more than 40 pupils, according to the Health Protection Agency.
The school’s first reported case was on 18 May, but following tests by the HPA a further 44 people attending the school have been confirmed as having swine flu.
Now 41 children and three adults at Welford Primary School in Handsworth, have been confirmed as having the H1N1 influenza A virus.
A further two cases in the East of England and one in London mean the total number of confirmed cases in the UK increased by 47 in one day to 184.
HPA West Midlands regional director Dr Sue Ibbotson, said: ‘While the illness can be unpleasant for those suffering, none of the cases has been hospitalised. Viruses spread easily in schools and the HPA is working hard with the school and parents to limit its further spread.’
