Swine flu pandemic edges closer
As WHO considers declaring a global pandemic, the number of swine flu cases in the UK has risen to 750 plus 607 possibles.
WHO director-general Margaret Chan is consulting world leaders about changing the international alert status. She says: ‘Once I get indisputable evidence, I will make the announcement.’
In Britain, the prognosis for swine flu is not yet regarded as critical. A department of Health spokeswoman says: ‘We have not yet seen evidence of sustained community transmission. The cases have so far been generally mild in most people, but are proving to be severe in a small minority of cases.’
The Health Protection Agency reports that the new cases included one in the East Midlands, six in London, 14 in the North East, two in the South East and 19 in the West Midlands. In Scotland, the total is now 47, with one in Northern Ireland.
