Swine flu school closures abandoned in highly affected areas
Swine flu is so widespread in some areas of Birmingham and London that school closures have ceased, the Health Protection Agency has said.
School closures and containment with antiviral drugs will continue in areas where the disease is less prevalent.
But containment in this way has been abandoned because the H1N1 swine flu virus is now so prevalent in communities in some areas.
‘There are some areas where there is so much transmission outside school it becomes a moot activity,’ the HPA spokesperson said.
‘Also in some areas of London they are seeing levels of increased transmission so they are moving to clinical diagnosis,’ the spokesperson added.
There have now been 2795 cases of swine flu in the UK, according to figures from the Health Protection Agency and the Scottish Government.
