Andy Burnham named as new health secretary in reshuffle
Andy Burnham has been confirmed as health secretary in Gordon Brown’s cabinet reshuffle.
The MP for Leigh in Greater Manchester replaces Alan Johnson who has moved to the Home Office.
Mr Burnham, 39, was previously culture, media and sport secretary - a post he has held since January 2008.
However, before that he was health minister for delivery and quality, with a brief covering the pharmaceutical industry, a post he held for a year before being promoted to chief secretary to the Treasury.
During his time as health minister, Mr Burnham championed the idea of an NHS Constitution, a document that became reality on the 60th anniversary of the NHS last summer.
Mr Burnham was also a member of the Commons health select committee between 2001 and 2003.
