Getting things done

UNISON is the largest union in the NHS and this gives us a unique opportunity to get our members voices heard right at the heart of government.

Influencing government policy on the NHS and healthcare

UNISON puts the views of healthcare workers forward on key issues facing the NHS like patient safety, the NHS constitution and the issue of patients being allowed to ‘top-up’ their NHS care by paying extra for drugs not funded by the NHS.

UNISON’s head of nursing Gail Adams is part of a new commission of experts, set up by the Prime Minister Gordon Brown, to advise on the future role of nurses and midwives.

Talking to ministers

Our nurses attend top level meetings with government ministers and senior NHS and Department of Health staff.

We help our members write to their MPs and we organise events like parliamentary lobbies.

We give our nurses the opportunity to have their voices heard on issues that affect them, the patients they care for and the NHS they care about. That’s a real say in the future of the NHS.

We have 1.3 million members – we make our voices heard!
