Making the NHS a better place for patients and staff

In addition to its role of representing members in the workplace, UNISON is an effective campaigning organisation when our members and the union work together to make a real difference.

UNISON runs a range of union-wide campaigns on issues like equal pay, pay, health and safety and equalities on behalf of our members wherever they work.

We also run specific campaigns around health and the NHS – some are run by local branches, others are organised by the union nationally.

Our vision for the NHS

Our vision is a modern NHS that is properly funded and effective. We want to help shape the NHS of the future but are concerned about the increasing involvement of private companies in the provision of NHS services. We believe strongly that the NHS should continue to be a public service, funded through taxation and free at the point of delivery. We are resisting the creeping privatisation of our NHS, whether in primary or acute care, as we believe it is bad for patients and bad for NHS staff.

The issues that matter to you

We campaign for an end to violence against NHS staff, effective measures to tackle bullying and for safer needlestick devices. We are also continuing to call for salary status for all nursing students while, at the same time, pressing for improvements to the bursary scheme.

Campaigning where you work

Local UNISON branches have organised several successful campaigns around issues like car parking charges in NHS trusts, green travel policies and for local learning agreements to give paid time off for staff to attend courses.
