Viagra failure can damage self-esteem
Failure of the first dose of erectile dysfunction medications such as sildenafil (Viagra) can result damage confidence and self esteem in men, according to a study.
The study of 630 men with ED found failure of the first dose of PDE5 inhibitors impacted on overall confidence (58%), relationships (47%) and self-esteem (68%).
Additionally 77% were worried the condition was permanent and 32% reported feelings of depression.
Study author David Edwards, an Oxfordshire GP, said: ‘The first consultation and subsequent treatment can be critical in determining the success of longer term management. The study is a first step towards highlighting the importance of this critical phase.’
The study was presented at the 10th Congress of the European Society of Sexual Medicine in Lisbon and was sponsored by a grant from pharmaceuticals company Bayer Schering Pharma.
